Showdown

In Keres, the next morning, Diablo arose early. He was so excited about the upcoming trial at Skull Mountain that he hadn’t slept a wink. He had declared today to be a national holiday, and every home’s Organism had squawked out the good news last evening.

During the broadcast, Diablo had made it clear that attendance at the Skull was mandatory. Every family member from all twelve districts would be registered at the gate, and anyone not appearing would be sentenced to sixty days in prison, including women and children.

Diablo’s mobile rang. His chauffeur informed him that he was out-front waiting to drive him to the Skull. Hagop watched in the mirror as Diablo dressed them for the big event. He took a deep breath and thought, This will be the last time Diablo represents me in public. It’s time these misfits understand who’s really in charge of this nation. Unbeknownst to Diablo, his alter ego was planning to show off his own powers at the trial. That will certainly get a rise out of the Keresians, Hagop thought.

At the same time, Diablo was donning a black shirt and tuxedo and black patent leather shoes. He straightened his red ascot before carefully lifting a heavy gold chain from a red velvet box and placing it around his neck. Every link of the chain was adorned with diamonds, and a large ruby rested in the gold-encrusted medallion that hung low in the center of his chest. The piece was magnificent. He donned his long flaming-red velvet cloak, adjusted his ruby-studded black velvet beret on his head, and slipped on white gloves. He stepped back and stared at himself in the mirror.

“You truly are a handsome devil,” he mumbled.

Keresians were coming from all twelve districts heading for the Skull. The streets were lined early with cars. Although the populace wasn’t sure what the celebration was about, they all wanted a good seat. Some neighbors waved as they slowly drove past each other. Others shouted friendly hellos and honked their horns. Children, elated to have a day off from school, were seated in the back of their automobiles, squealing with delight. Some families had even packed lunches. This occasion, however, would be anything but a picnic.

At the same time, the General was in his bedroom, attaching the final decoration to his already medal-laden uniform when Jackson knocked on the door.

“Can I come in, Dad?” he asked.

“Yes, what’s on your mind?” The General turned, and before Jackson could reply, he asked, “What is that you’re wearing?”

“What’s wrong with it?” Jackson replied, annoyed that his father rarely had anything good to say to him.

“Well, today is sort of a gala event, son. Most people are dressing for the occasion.”

“Well, I am dressed,” Jackson retorted. “Anyhow, I don’t own a tuxedo, and if I did, I wouldn’t wear it. I don’t see anything festive about two guys being tried for having an opinion other than yours and the Establishment’s.”

Jackson was truly fond of Izaiah and didn’t want to see him hurt.
